Functional Movement Screen (continued)

CES Fitness is the only fitness organization in the Twin Cities using the Functional Movement Screen (FMS) to evaluate the quality of an individual’s movement patterns. This Screen was developed by Gray Cook, a physical therapist who has worked with such notable athletes as Serena Williams, Michelle Wie, the Indianapolis Colts and several other Division I and NFL teams. The screen points out limitations in the basic movement patterns of otherwise healthy people. The Screen consists of seven simple tests based on the six primary movement patterns: squat, lunge, bend, twist, push, and pull. Every test includes three components: balance, mobility, and/or stability. Testing all three components of the primary movement patterns creates an environment in which an individual’s limitations become obvious. Each test is graded with a simple scoring system with a maximum score of 21. With this graded information, a CES practitioner develops an individualized training plan with specific corrective exercise strategies to correct limitations and weaknesses. The benefits of using the FMS include: reducing the risk of injury, improving performance in a variety of activities, and increasing the quality of everyday life.
